Car racing

You will need:

  • 1 plain white plastic tablecloth large enough to completely cover your table
  • black ballpoint pen
  • 1 dice
  • 6 small toy cars of approximately the same size

Before you start

  1. Place the tablecloth evenly over your table and draw a race track using the ballpoint pen. Make sure that the type of pen you use will not smudge off. If in doubt ask at your local art shop. Make an oval track if your table is rectangular and a round track if your table is round. Start with the outside line and bring it as close to the edge as possible (not closer to the edge than 1"). Note - you may like to ask an adult to help with the drawing of the track because this is quite difficult and very important. They could lightly pencil in the lines for you and you could then go over them with the pen.
  2. Add more lines for the other lanes. 6 is ideal but if your table is small then 4 would be sufficient. Stand one of your cars onto the track to make sure the lanes will be wide enough for the cars.
  3. Using a ruler mark the lanes into segments making sure that each segment is long enough to contain 1 car (remember that the inside lanes will be shorter).
  4. Using the pen draw in a starting and a finishing point. You can use a different coloured pen for this so that it stands out.

To play the game:

  • Each player chooses a car and places it on the starting point. The first player to throw a 6 with the dice can start and the others take turns in a clockwise direction.
  • When you have your turn you can move your car along the same number of spaces shown on the dice.
  • The first player to reach the finishing line is the winner. This game can be played with your friends or brothers and sisters and can be played at parties with a small prize for the winners. It usually gets quite noisy when everyone starts cheering on their car, but is great fun!

Note: This game can be varied to use plastic animals or people or anything else that you like. If you cannot find a plain white cloth, you may be able to substitute an oilcloth by reversing it onto the white side.
