Cooking instructions

Cooking is fun, but it's important to remember certain rules for hygiene and safety. Here are a few points to remember.

  • Always wash your hands well before starting.
  • DO NOT try to boil water on your own. Ask a parent or adult to do this for you.
  • If you need to use the cooker or grill, ask an adult to turn it on for you and assist you if necessary.
  • Use oven gloves to protect your hands.
  • Wear an apron to protect your clothes.
  • Remember to turn the cooker off when you have finished.
  • You may need help when cutting up sweets or biscuits.
  • Be careful when using sharp knives!
  • It's a good idea to read the recipe before you start so that you can collect together all the ingredients and utensils that you will need.
  • Measure all ingredients very carefully.
  • Don't mix metric and imperial measurements.

Sweets or cookies make ideal gifts for your family or friends, so if you are going to give them as a present, put them in a decorated box. You could cover an old sweet box with coloured tissue or crepe paper; or you could paint the box. Put gold, silver or white doilies inside the box and place a piece of greaseproof paper between the layers of sweets.

NOTE FOR PARENTS:
Many children nowadays are allergic to nuts, so avoid peanut butter for very young children. Other allergies children may have include:- milk, eggs, sesame seeds, certain fruits.
