Pen and pencil holders

You will need:

  • Packet of self-hardening clay
  • Poster or acrylic paints
  • Paintbrush
  • Clear varnish
  • A pencil to measure height and width

Instructions:
Decide what shape you want to make - a snake, a snail or a different shape altogether.

Snake

  • First break off quite a large chunk of clay and roll it into a long sausage shape.
  • Roll it round and round until it looks like the picture.
  • Make a few holes around the top layers by pressing a pencil right into the clay. Make sure that your snake is large enough so that the pencil won't fall out.
  • When completely dried out, paint and varnish.
Snail
  • Make a rather fat sausage shape and mould into the base of the body as shown in the picture.
  • Try to mould the two antennae out of the head itself. If you try and add them later they may fall off.
  • Make another slightly thinner but longer sausage shape and curl around a few times to make the shell.
  • Put the two shapes together and make sure they won't fall apart. Also make sure that the model is stable as it has to stand up on its own with a few pencils or pens inside.
  • Make a few holes by pressing a pencil deep into the top of the shell. Ensure that the snail shell is large enough to hold the pencil without danger of it toppling out.
  • Finally roll a couple of small balls and stick to the head as eyes. When completely dried out, paint and varnish.
